Ironman Calgary 70.3 Results 2011

Timothy O'Donnell and Tenille Hoogland are the favorites to top Ironman Calgary 70.3 results 2011.

This weeks Ironman 70.3 takes place in my home town of Calgary, Alberta.

THE COURSE

I remember in the inaugural event a few years ago that the biggest fear for most was that the water would be ice cold.

Ghost Lake is fed from Mountain run-off like most lakes in the area. However it did not appear to be a problem for most.

The weather is nothing short of perfect today with clear blue skies and there will be a great view of the Rocky Mountains as the athletes make their way along the point-to-point bike course in this 2 transition zone race.

The swim venue at Ghost Lake is 45k west of Calgary.

Pro Tim O?Donnell actually calls the Ghost Lake swim one of his favorite swim courses. Tim was the 2009 Calgary 70.3 champion and is back to take on the course one more time.

It's very hard not to pick Tim as the favorite in this race, but my feeling is that Canadian Tom Evans could do very well in this race as well.

The bike course is point-to-point and will be challenging with it's many rolling hills. The course will take the athletes East towards Glenmore Reservoir.

The out-and-back run course follows the reservoir as well as parts of the Weaslehead Natural Reserve Park.

I have trained and raced up there many times over the decades and from many parts of the run course the athletes will be able to see the Calgary skyline off in the distance.

THE MALE PROS

Tim O?Donnell sure looks like the one to beat as he attempts to get back the title that Kieran Doe won last year.

So how good is Tim. He is on top of the Kona pro rankings and also the 70.3 rankings as well. It is going take a very special effort by someone if they hope to catch Tim and top the Ironman Calgary results 2011.

Kieran Doe is also back to defend his 2010 title. Kieran also won his first Ironman in Penticton in 2007, so triathlons in Canada have been good to him.

Home crowd favorite Tom Evans comes off a podium finish in IRONMAN COEUR D'ALENE 2011

Jordan Rapp is also competing and could have something to say before the day is done. He could very well challenge for the win here in Calgary.

In the women?s race there are several pros that stand out and could end up on top of the Calgary 70.3 results 2011.

Canadian Sara Gross is sure to be the crowd favorite. Her season started out slow but two wins at the 70.3 in June will have her confidence level at a high today and I expect she will challenge for the win today.

However she will be up against the likes Tenille Hoogland who looks to be in fine form coming into today's race.

Wetsuits are permitted and recommended as the water is expected to be 18-20C or 65-70F which strangely enough is the same temperature as the water at Ironman UK in Bolton that is also underway today.

It was right about here that it became clear that something was not quite right with Tom Evans. Tom was right there in the swim and I'm not sure what happened after that. As I said earlier long before the race start, I felt Tom would be a huge factor in the Ironman Calgary 70.3 results at the end of the day.

I'm thinking it could be one of two things. He may have had mechanical problems as he was far off his best bike times. Or perhaps his huge effort in Ironman Coeur d'Alene took it's toll and he may have decided that it just was not his day.

Whatever the case he is a very class act for finishing the race despite not making it into the top ten.

Near the end of the bike leg Tenille Hoogland was well in front of Sara Gross of Canada and looked like she would be hard to catch as she started out on the run course with a lead of over 4 minutes. Mackenzie Madison was in third place and Danelle Kabush in fourth.

There was a bit of a shake-up in the women's standing as they headed out for the run. Sara had slipped to third spot.

It was pretty hard not to go with Timothy O'Donnell as the favorite to win this race. He is in amazing form and should be a real force when Fall and Ironman Hawaii time rolls around.

It was a real treat having him take part in the Ironman Calgary 70.3 race as he is obviously one of the most outstanding Ironman pros in the world today.

He is in a league all his own. Jordan Rapp should also be congratulated on a great race as he took second spot in a strong pro field.

In the women's pro race, Sara Gross has pulled back a few minutes on the leader Tenille Hoogland by the 10k mark, but Tenille still had a substantial lead with about half of the run course left to cover.

WOW! What a finish! Tenille Hoogland holds on to win by just 6 seconds over Sara Gross who came charging at the end. What an amazing race by Sara and gutsy race by Tenille for managing to hang on.

It looked like Tenille Hoogland had a safe lead as they started the run course, but Sara might just have had her best 70.3 run ever and fell just short at the end.

Tenille Hoogland is our 2011 Viterra Ironman 70.3 Champion. She narrowly won her very first Ironman 70.3 race by holding off the charging Sara Gross by 6 seconds! A great finish.

Milos Kostic.........................5:46:49

Milos had a swim time of 53:40 a bike of 2:50:58 and a run of 1:51:42.

Simply Amazing. How can we not be inspired by Milos and come to the realization that age need not be a barrier in all that we strive to do.

I know there are many of you who were attempting your first Ironman 70.3 distance on July 31, 2011 in Calgary.

I have met many of you and I'm happy to say that some of you have used Ironstruck as your guide as you make your way in your amazing journey.

Regardless of how the day went you should be very proud of making it to the start line. It takes courage, self-confidence, and a lot of hard work to reach that point for the first time.

So if you have a vision and a dream of reaching the Ironman finish line one day you can only imagine how it will feel when the morning arrives down the road when you are waiting for the start gun........perhaps at Ironman Canada.

Can you do it? Of course you can if it's in your heart and you are truly Ironstruck. You have already shown by your performance on this day that you have it within you.

Congratulations on your spectacular performance and best of luck in your triathlon journey over the years to come.

*** "I wrote to you sometime last year, when I was debating whether or not to use a mountain bike for my first attempt at Ironman. You wrote a both sensible and encouraging reply.

In the end, I opted to purchase a road bike. I've forwarded you the story of how my race went, but most of all I wanted to say thanks again for your book Ironstruck, which I read and re-read a bunch of times, and which was by far my favorite of all of the half dozen or so I read during the course of my training."

All the best,Eric

I just completed my first Ironman in St. George, UT. Your book, Ironstruck - 500 Ironman Questions and Answers, was invaluable in preparing me to get to the finish line. I didn't get any surprises during the race, thanks to the info you provided in your book.

Also, your advice about pushing big gears over the tops of hills to gain more speed going down was spot on. I made the bike cut-off in large part to this advice.

Thanks again for a great book and insight!

hi Ray,About 5 years ago just moved from Holland to SA Port Elizabeth I was a spectator of Ironman SA and said to myself I want to do such an event myself onetime.Looking for more info I came across Ironstruck and had a lot of pleasure in reading your stories and I want to compliment you the way you describe these. I also wrote you an email asking you some questions and got response. I know its years ago but I just want to tell you that this year I finished the 70.3 East London 7.10 hrs and Ironman SA 13:10 hrs.And will do it next year again and 12.5 hrs will be my goal.rgds Cees

When I think of all the people I have heard from over the past few years who have said my two Ironstruck books helped them realize their Ironman dream I am beginning to think they have gotten more people to the Ironman finish line than any triathlon book in the world.

"Ironstruck...The Ironman Triathlon Journey" is a perfect book for those who have the Ironman on their mind and perhaps need some motivation, inspiration, and encouragement to help them make that final decision to challenge the Ironman and make it to the finish line.

"Ironstruck? 500 Ironman Triathlon Questions and Answers" is most like the only Q+A book in the world on the subject of triathlon in general and the Ironman.

This is the perfect book for the triathlete who has decided to take on the Ironman for the first time, or perhaps has done one or two and would like some insight from a different point of view.

It is a great companion book for "Ironstruck...The Ironman Journey" and the pair of books would make a great gift.
