A BIT ABOUT THE RACE

From the very beginning since it's debut in Frankfurt, Ironman Germany has been a great success story.

It's no surprise when you consider how the country has embaced the sport of triathlon since it's beginnings and as result has been home to some of the greatest Ironman triathlon athletes ever.

THE COURSE

The Ironman Frankfurter European Championship swim is two-loops and takes place in the Langemaar Waldsee. It's a lake that is actually about 11 kilometers from the Frankfurt race center.

when the athletes get out of the water they will find themselves on a challenging bike course that is highly technical and fast at the same time. So expect to see some great bike splits in the Ironman Frankfurter European Championships results 2011.

The bike course is actually three legs, with a short one of 11k to start the bike course from the swim/bike transition that returns the riders to Frankfurt before they tackle two out-and-back loops before finally ending up at the bike/run transition in the Frankfurt race center for the start of the marathon.

The run course is three-loops of 14k.

The course includes several out and back sections and although the course might be fast and flat, all the turns it contains will most likely slow down the final times.

There are several 180 degree turns and it's next to impossible to keep up any sort of high speed momentum.

One thing is for sure, the athletes will constantly be seeing their competitors through-out the run and will be able to gauge what they have to do to stay ahead or catch up.

Well, with 13 German pros in the race you would think at least one of them would be on the podium.

I would be surprised if Thomas Hellriegel can keep up with this group. I'm sure he will have a great bike but not so sure he will hang on in the run.

We also have Faris Al-Sultan going in this race and he is a real threat. Who will ever forget the stunning win by Faris in Kona in 2005. He had a winning time of 8:14:17 and Cameron Brown was second in a time of 8:19:36.

Faris went under 50 minutes in the swim that year and it would be no surprise if he leads out of the water in Frankfurt, however my pick to be on top of the Ironman Frankfurt european championships 2011 results is Cameron Brown.

That being said, I really would have given the edge to Michael Raelert to win this race, but he has withdrawn because of a nagging back injury. He still has to put in a great result in an Ironman somewhere in order to get into Kona.

YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST I pick Micael Raelert to come flying down Main Street In Penticton in the lead and to be called in for the victory in Ironman Canada 2011 in August by race Announcer Steve King. Actually, I don't even know if he has entered, but that's my guess.

And no, I do not change my picks after the race. What fun is that. The race is still 4 days away as I prepare this page for the Ironman Frankfurt european championships 2011 results.

This is going to be one great race for the women as there are probably five pros who could win if they peak on race day.

Silvia Felt won IRONMAN FRANCE 2011 less than three weeks ago and for that reason I do not pick her to win in Frankfurt.

Just my own thoughts on it but I believe she may fall off the pace in the run as a month does not seem to be enough rest time in between intense Ironman races.

Craig Alexander is a good example of what can happen. He won IRONMAN COEUR D'ALENE 2011 and within 3 weeks ran in the IRONMAN RACINE 70.3 2011 and faded to 8th place and was 20 minutes off the pace.

We know Desiree Ficker can sure run as she won the Austin Marathon this year, but I think she might be over-matched by this field of triathlon pros, however she has a shot at maybe third place on the strength of her running, and she did have a tune-up just recently in Edmonton at the ITU race.

I really think that Caroline Steffen and Samantha Warriner will be fighting it out for the top spot in the Ironman Frankfurt European championships 2011 results.

Samantha won Ironman New zealand 2011 and Caroline won Ironman IRONMAN AUSTRALIA 2011and IRONMAN SWITZERLAND 70.3 2011 as well.

I am going to go with Samantha Warriner to win this race as its just possible that Caroline has raced so hard and so well this year that she needs more of a break.

It's a wide open race today there were a few surprises as the men entered the swim/bike transition.

OUT ON THE BIKE COURSE

It did not take long for Al-Sultan Faris to assert himself and just 12k into the bike he flys into the lead.

As is quite usual in any Ironman event, you really can't put too much emphasis on who finishes at or near the top in the swim.

There are some great swimmers out there, age-groupers and pros alike and usually it's not too long into the bike course when the real contenders make their way to the front. This is the case today in Frankfurt as well.

For the women it was Lucie Zelenkova holding the lead early on with Steffen Caroline in second place. Okay so, where is my pick Samantha Warriner? Okay, I see her now. She is just about 4:30 off the pace early on in the bike.

However as the bike race progresses Caroline Steffen takes control and builds a 7 minute lead ove Lucie Zelenkova and Samantha is almost 13 minutes back of the lead in 5th place.

Late in the bike I am not giving up on Samantha Warriner who has worked her way into 4th place at the 129k mark of the bike. She is almost 15 minutes behind, but anything can happen out on the marathon course.

THE RUN

Out on the run course, Faris Al-Sultan has himself a good lead of 8:53 over Sylvain Sundre who is in second place. George Potrebitsch of Germany is in third place and Luke McKenzie of Australia is in fourth.

It does not appear that my pick to challenge for the win, Cameron Brown is having a great day as he is almost 25 minutes off of the leaders pace.

For the pro women, I am doing a bit better with my pick of Samantha Warriner. At 13.5k she has a solid hold on 3rd place, 10:36 behind Caroline Stephen. Lucie is still running in second place 8:16 behind the leader and not that far in front of Samantha.

However, by the 34.5k mark things have really changed and Samantha has fallen back into 5th, but still just 8:24 off the lead as the women's race has really tightened up.

Caroline Steffen still leads but by only 3:25 over Lucie Zelenkova.

THE WINNER!

Jan Raphael is second in 8:19:31, and Michael Gohner had a great race to take third place in 8:20:26 to make it a German sweep for the pro men.

Wow! Michael Gohner had a 2:47:55 marathon for the fastest run of the day so that explains his great finish result as he was well off the pace early on in the race.

On the womens side things were really heating up in the race. At 34k only 8:24 separates the top five women with Caroline Steffen in first back to Samantha Warriner in fifth.

Lucie Zelenkova is just 3:25 behind in second place.

With just one kilometer to ge Caroline Steffen was cramping badly and was trying to hang on for the win.

CAROLINE STEFFEN hangs on to top the ironman frankfurt European championship results 2011 with a winning time of 9:12:13. This is fast becoming my favorite picture of all the pro women as I have used it three times already this year as Caroline also won Ironman Australia 2011 and the Switzerland 70.3 race as well.

It was a close race for second place as Sonja Tajsich is about to pass Lucie Zelenkova but Lucie digs in and holds on for second place.

All in all, my picks to win didn't do too badly. Cameron Brown moved up quite a bit in the run and took seventh place. Samantha Warriner finished just 6 minutes behind winner Caroline Steffen and was fifth.

I felt that Caroline and Samantha would be fighting it out for the win, but that battle did not materialize as Caroline continues her streak of amazing results in 2011.

The only reason I did not pick her is because of how many top efforts she has put in this year and I thought she might be getting a bit tired.

Hopefully she will back off a little now for some well-earned rest and be a force in Kona 2011.

Al-Sultan Faris was not a surprise winner at all, but I really thought that Cameron Brown would be pressing him late in the marathon, however Cameron was too far back coming off the bike.

London ITU Championship Results 2011

The London ITU Championship results 2011 will go a long way toward determining which triathletes will represent their country in the 2012 Olympics.

The course for the ITU World Championships London will also be the course for the London Olympic Games a year from now. This is the only chance that some of the best triathletes in the world will get to try out the course.

It is built for speed and without much to speak of in the way of hills it's expected that it will be a blistering fast pace.

This is especially true in the run where the best runners will most likely find themselves on the podium if they can stay with the lead pack of bikers.

The bike course will take the athletes past Buckingham Palace.

The women will take center stage on Saturday and the men will race on Sunday. There will also be 4,500 other triathletes taking part in this race that sold out long ago.

This is going to be a huge race for many of the top athletes as it is likely that many countries will be using this race in London to help decide who will represent them on the same course next year during the Olympics.

So who is going to be at the top of the London ITU 2011 results when the women's race takes place in 6 or 7 hours from now?

I really liked Kiyomi Niwata of Japan to win the ITU World Cup in Edmonton in the last ITU race and she finished in fifth place.

She had been racing well earlier in the season in Asia. The Edmonton race was won by Ashleigh Gentle from Australia and Kiyomi and Ashleigh are the only two in this race who were in the top five in Edmonton.

Being Canadian I would love to see Paula Findlay win and she is scheduled to compete despite the fact she is not 100% healthy because of her nagging hip injury.

That being said, I truly hope she does not over-extend herself and try and win this race at all costs. All Paula really needs is to be in the top eight in order to officially make the Canadian Olympic team.

She has another option as well. If she does not do it in this race she will have another opportunity in September in the Grand Final event that will take place in Beijing.

I am going to go with Andrea Hewitt of New Zealand to have another good showing here and perhaps make the podium. Ashleigh Gentle is obviously in fine form and could well steal another race. In order to do so she will have to beat out fellow Australians Emma Moffat and Emma Snowsill.

Of course Barbara Riveros Diaz the leader of the world rankings for 2011 is sure to make herself known before the race is over.

Helen Jenkins is not feeling great with a touch of the flu, but sometimes athletes perform at their best when under the weather. It happens all the time.

THE RACE

It is amazingly warm in London for race morning at 21.8 degrees which means it will be a "no-wetsuit" swim.

The swim is one long loop so unlike some of the ITU races the athletes will not have to leave and re-enter the water for a second loop.

In the final stages of the swim all the top women are very aware of getting out of transition quickly and being in the first group of bikers.

In many ways that can determine whether or not an athlete will even have a chance at the podium. There are so many great runners in the field that it is pretty difficult to make up 2 or 3 minutes if you are left out of the lead group and are in a chase group of bikers.

Among the first women out of the water in just over 19 minutes was Sarah Haskins and Emma Snowsill with Paula Findlay about 17 seconds off the pace.

Barbara Riveros Diaz is over a minute off the pace and will miss the main pack.

THE BIKE

Great Britain has three riders up in the front early on and Paula Findlay has caught up with the main pack of around 20 women.

As the bike progressed a pack of 34 riders eventually form the main pack with the chase group a minute behind.

Most of the big names are in the front group and it will come down to the run most likely. The biggest surprise is that the points leader Barbara Riveros Diaz is stuck over a minute behind with the second group.

She could very easily lose her hold on first place in the standings if they don't manage to close the gap by the end of the bike.

It won't be long before the mystery of how Paula Findlay is feeling will be revealed.

She has not had any run training for five weeks due to her hip injury. Whatever happens it will be very helpful for Paula to be on the course so she will know what to expect at the Olympics in 2012.

With three laps to go in the bike the chase group managed to close the gap to 45 seconds.

There are many athletes in the second pack who need a top ten finish in order to represent their country in the Olympics so they can't afford to be very far when the run start.

Ashleigh Gentle from Australia who won in Edmonton is in the chase pack.

Moffatt, Snowsill, Hewitt, and Paula Findlay are staying away from the lead of the main bike pack to save their legs, but most likely will be among the lead runners early on in the run course.

At the bell lap the chase group is only 27 seconds behind.

THE RUN

Pretty unbelievable that the chase group was allowed to catch up over one minute on the lead group.

The run is going to be pretty interesting now that 54 women will be in the mix.

So many of the women have to be in the first nine in order to represent their country in the Olympics so there are going to be some very disappointed triathletes in less than an hour.

Both Helen Jenkins and Paula Findlay are not feeling that well today but will both be in transition with the rest.

It doesn't take long for a lead pack to form on the run course. The group includes Emma Moffatt, Helen Jenkins, Barbara Riveros Diaz, Paula Findlay, and Emma Snowsill.

Ashleigh Gentle looks like she is still in great form as she catches the back of the lead pack.

Paula Findlay is sitting in behind Moffatt and Snowsill. Paula just needs a top 8 finish to qualify for 2012 and she may decide not to push the pace which would be a smart move if she is not feeling 100%.

However there is still half the run to go and lots can happen.

Helen Jenkins looks strongest of all with a 15 meter lead and now it's just a matter of holding on for one more lap.

What a performance by Helen considering she went into the race under the weather.

What a great race it was.

As might be expected, Paula Findlay was not in top form and finished well off the pace, but will no doubt be ready for the Grand Finale in Beijing where she will most likely officially qualify for the London Olympics in 2012.

Barbara Riveros Diaz also finished off the pace but still maintains her lead in the points standings.

As for the men's race that takes place on Sunday August 7th, there are probably at least 8 or 10 athletes capable of winning this race.

Some will need to place as high up in the final standings as possible in order to earn the right to represent their country in the upcoming 2012 Olympics.

Javier Gomez from Spain who won last year?s World Championships and the London race 12 months ago is sure to be in the fight for top spot.

Alistair Brownlee has won World Championship races in Madrid and Kitzbuehel this year and would love to win another in front of the home crowd.

Jonathan Brownlee had second place finishes in Sydney and Madrid this and is also part of the strong Great Britain team in this race.

Perhaps with the most on like for the Great Britain athletes is Tim Don who will be attempting to take part in four consecutive Olympic Games. No doubt Tim will have to have the race of his life.

Then of course there is William Clarke who is currently sitting in second place in the points standings. Is Great Britain getting ready for an all-out effort at home in the London Games in 2012? You bet they are.

I will never forget the thrill Simon Whitfield provided Canadians when he won the first ever Olympic triathlon in the Sydney Olympics. Does Simon have what it takes to make it to the big show one more time?

Simon might just surprise a lot of people who might just think he is past his prime, but I look for a huge race from Simon today.

Then of course their is Chris McCormack, Hunter Kemper and several Germans who will be fighting it out to make their respective Olympic teams.

Russia also has two strong entries in Alexander Brukhankov and Dmitry Polyansky who are currently in fifth and sixth place in the Championship points standings.

Any one of these athletes I named are quite capable of standing on the podium Sunday afternoon and it promises to be a sensational race.

It was Frodeno and Gomez who came out of the water first but it wasn't long before Brukhankov, Ali Brownlee, Elvery, and Brukhankov broke away on the bike to form a lead group.

At one point in the bike the lead group grew to about 15 riders that included,Jones, Petzold, Raphael, Brukhankov, Gomez, Frodeno, the Brownlee Brothers, Elvery, Gemmell, and Belaubre.

Ivan Rana, Alistair Brownlee, Elvery, and Brukhankov make a break and are in the front by themselves.

As they left the run transition the lead group still maintained a large lead and at this point it was obvious from the way Alistair Brownlee was running that he was going to win the race pretty handily.

The men had the worst of the weather and it is Alistair Brownlee winning the London ITI Championship by a wide margin.

Brukhankov finishes in second place and Jonathan Brownlee completes the podium.

Javier Gomez finishes in fourth place.

Top 10 finishers were Brownlee, Brukhankov, J Brownlee, Gomez, Justus, Vidal, Hauss, Kahlefeldt, Riederer, Luis.

Alistair had an amazing run time of 29:50!

This certainly bodes well for the British team as London prepares to host the 2012 Olympic Summer Games.

As far as Canada goes it seems that our best chance at a podium finish in triathlon will be with Paul Findlay.

Congratulations to the British team for a great performance in what can only be described as "horrendous" race conditions that say several athletes drop out of the race.

Michael Raelert Will Not Race Ironman World Championship

Germany’s Michael Raelert has announced he will not compete in the 2011 Ironman World Championship race due to an injury. Raelert not only lacks the points necessary to qualify for the race, he also hasn’t completed the necessary Ironman. Raelert had planned on racing in the Ironman European Championships back on July 24, but didn’t make the start due to a hip injury that has plagued him on and off throughout the season. Raelert says he will still make the start to defend his Ironman World Championship 70.3 title in Las Vegas, Nev.

Raelert posted the following statement on the website he shares with his brother Andreas (translated from German using Google Translate):

WTC Announces Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship

The Melbourne race will offer one of the highest prize purses on the Ironman circuit.

World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) and the Premier of Victoria announced today that the inaugural Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship will take place in Melbourne, Australia, on March 25, 2012. This race will be the first-ever Ironman triathlon competition to be held in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

Athletes will compete for a professional prize purse of $100,000 USD and 75 age group qualifying slots to the 2012 Ironman World Championship, more than any other race in the Asia-Pacific region.
