Ironman UK Results 2011

Aaron Farlow of Australia tops the ironman uk results 2011 with a course record 8:24:34 and Kirsten Moeller of Germany takes the women's title with course record time of 9:19:04.

As I prepare this results page it's three days before the next Ironman Triathlon takes place and that honor goes to Bolton in the United Kingdom.

At this point it's totally up for grabs about who will top the Ironman U.K. results 2011.

The men's pro field will be without Phillip Graves who is nursing an injury and Stephen Bayliss who's wife Bella is about to give birth to their first baby.

ironman-uk-results-2011

Stephen has been racing well this year and had a second place finish in Ironman U.K. 70.3 earlier in the season.

Had he been racing I'm sure he would have been my pick to win in Bolton on Sunday July 31, 2011.

There is a pretty good chance that both Stephen and Bella will make an appearance in Ironman U.K.2011.

Australian Aaron Farlow will is entered in the race, but just finished racing in the Alpe d'Heuz Triathlon. He had good race and made the podium, but it sure does not seem like enough recovery time and it would be quite a surprise if he were able to finish on top in Ironman U.K. My feeling is that he will come up short in this race.

There is sure to be lots of support for Toby Radcliffe, Paul Hawkins, and Nick Saunders and it's almost a certainty that Britain will be represented on the podium somewhere, however I am going with a European to win this race.

Romain Guillame of France is my pick to top the Ironman U.K. results 2011 on the strength of his biking. Time will tell.

My guess is that either Toby Radcliffe or Nick Saunderswill be dueling with Romain for the win once they get out on the marathon course. Of course I could be completely wrong, but that's my guess and I'm sticking to it.

Two of the favorites on the pro women side are sure to be returning 2010 UK podium finishers Yvette Grice who was first and will be trying to repeat and Joanna Carrit who finished third.

No doubt they will get quite a boost from the home crowd who will be cheering them on.However I believe they will be chasing

Desiree Ficker to the finish line. Desiree is my choice to challenge for the win as she is rounding into form nicely. However, she certainly is racing a lot of big races close together and it all depends if Desiree over-extended herself in finishing fifth in IRONMAN COEUR D'ALENE 2011 in late June.

She also had a seventh place finish in the IRONMAN TEXAS RESULTS 2011 with a time of 9:24:09.

If she is in form and not worn down from lots of racing it would be no surprise at all to see her leading as the pro women head out onto the marathon course. The tough UK bike course might be perfect for her.

Diana Riesler is a late entry and will most likely be the one to give Desiree Ficker the biggest challenge and is also very capable of leading off of the bike as she is a strong cyclist as well. I am leading towards Diana to win this race.

THE COURSE

The 2.4 mile Bolton swim course is two loops and will travel in a counter-clockwise direction at the Pennington Flash.

Of course it will be a wetsuit swim and athletes and organizers alike will be hoping for good weather.

The 3-loop bike course as mentioned is tough and demanding and could well be the determining factor in the Ironman U.K. results 2011.

There is no doubt that the English countryside is quite stunning, but it's been my experience that when the pain sets in late in the bike, the scenery on any bike course was the last thing on my mind in Ironman races and getting off the bike was the first.

Most athletes have their sights fixed firmly on the road just in front of them and miss out on the course vista that surrounds them no matter what Ironman event they are taking part in.

The 26.2 mile run course is a three-loop affair that is sure to favor the local favorites as they will pass by a huge cheering section several times.

By the way....best of luck to TONY KAY-- Tony is from the United Kingdom and has chosen Ironman U.K./Bolton for his very first ironman. He has a very special cause and I'm sure we all wish him the best.

As Tony told me,

I am attempting my first IM in July in Bolton England.I am trying to raise money for local cancer hospital where my dearest friend is being treated for terminal brain cancer.

As I am Canadian I can't forget to mention that fellow Canadians 71-year-old George Duffy and 61-year-old Mary Goodacre are the oldest male and female participants in Ironman UK.

Also, as the start of Ironman UK 2011 nears, best of luck to the large group of amputees entered in the race. They are truly inspiring.

THE RACE IS ON-JULY 31,2011

The water temperature is hovering around the 18 degree mark as the swimmers take to the water.

Romain Guillaume is not the first swimmer out of the water, but is the first pro and so my pick to will today is off to a flying start, but it's long, long, day out there.

On the women's side Yvette Grice was first out and that's no surprise as she holds the swim course record.

Romain decides to set a hot pace early on and at the first bike check-point is leading Simon Oliver and Aaron Farlow who are in second and third.

At the same point in the bike course Yvette Grice is maintaining the race lead for women since coming out of the water first.

Almost 3 hours into the race and the bike standings for the women are now officially Diana Riesler in first, Yvette Grice in second and Desiree Ficker in third.

This could very well end up being a race for second place on the pro women side as it's not long before Reisler has built up a nine minute lead over second place. However there is still a lot of biking to do and a marathon to run.

Aaron Farlow of Australia is the first male into the transition area and is followed 4 minutes later by Romain Guillaume who apparently took a spill on his bike. Now the real race begins!

It looks like I was completely wrong about how Aaron would recover from his recent big race as he set a new bike course record for Ironman U.K. of 4:53:46! However, I thought if he would fall short that it would catch up to him in the marathon so we will see if Aaron can sustain his killer pace into the run.

Diana Riesler reached the transition zone well ahead of Kristin Moeller and Yvette Grice and had almost a 12 minute lead heading out on the run course.

Aaron Farlow is holding tough on the lead with just over 6 miles to go. He is apparently slowing down and may be just off of the course record if he cannot maintain his pace.

Fraser Cartmell set the Iroman UK course record back in 2010 with a time of 8:40.ironman-uk-results-2011

Sure hope Aaron can do it as this is one very tough Ironman. Earlier this year he went through the windshield of a truck in Thailand.

He also had a podium finish just days ago in the Alpe d'Heuz Triathlon. Very impressive performance whether he sets a new record or not but he just might do it.

Aaron Farlow does it! He sets a new course record of 8:24:34! The most amazing stat to me however is that he also set a new run course record of 2:41:46. What a remarkable performance and what a way to record your first ever Ironman title.

My pick to win Romain Guillaume of France hangs on to take second place in 8:41:25. Nick Saunders of the UK is in third place in 8:51:31.

The first age-grouper is Miguel Platero of Spain who finishes in sixth place over-all in a time of 08:57:39. What a great result for him on a very tough Ironman course.

For the women it was past the seven hour mark in the race and Diana Reisler still held first place but Kristin Moeller of Germany has moved into second ahead of Yvette Grice and then began to wear down Diana and eventually caught her and took over first place late in the race.

Kirsten Moeller from Germany tops the Ironman UK results 2011 with a strong finish in the run to catch fellow German Diana Riesler who holds on for second place.

2:41:57 is an amazing time for Kirsten's marathon and she also sets a new course record of 9:19:04.
