Ironman Yeppoon takes place in Central Queensland in and around the Capricorn Resort.

It's one of those Ironman events where once people give it a try they tend to want to return. That includes age-groupers alike who have Ironman Yeppoon 70.3 circled on their race calendar every year.

There are several unique features about the Yeppoon course.

First of all, the swim course is a straight line, ocean point-to-point swim as opposed to the double-loop or large single loop that many 70.3 swim courses feature.

The swim is even current assisted and that should make for some fast swim times.

At race morning the water temperature was expected to be around 22c and that meant wetsuits would be optional.

The bike course is five-loops and is very spectator friendly as they get to see their favorite triathlete in action many times.

The run course is often called one of the best 70.3 runs in Australia.

It is partly paved road and part trail running in the shade and the runners never leave the Capricorn Resort grounds. Better yet it is super-flat and this will make for some very fast over-all finish times.

THE RACE

Matt Bailey was the first out of the water for the pro men with a time of 22:36. Mark Bowstead was second in 22:59 and and Ollie Whistler was third in 23:21.

For the women it was Lisa Marangon who was first in 25 minutes flat. Rachael Paxton was second in 25:52 followed by Renee Lane in 25:57.

Richard Thompson had the best bike time with a 2:11:10, but early on in the run there were 5 pro men still in the hunt for podium spots.

Ultimately it turned into a duel between Matty White and Ollie Whistler in an exciting battle that lasted right to the wire.

Ollie Whistler just managed to hold off a hard-charging Matty White and took first place in a spectacular time of 3:56:44 and Matty was just 6 seconds behind in 3:56:50.

For the women it was Lisa Marangon who continued to hold her lead out of the water with the fastest bike time of 2:27:08.

Michelle Wu as right behind Lisa and was not to be denied.
